We are delighted to announce that Simon Blencowe was awarded second place in the Southern Response design competition for a Cantabrian House.

The purpose of the competition was to provide the architectural community with the opportunity to reshape the city of Christchurch post 2010 and to enhance the public perception of living in TC3 areas and support the rebuild of those communities. The brief was to design a home of less than 150 square metres, including garage and decking and would be able to be built for $1700 per square metre. The house was to be built of lightweight construction to suit the Canterbury environment and TC3 land conditions, as well as consider environmentally sustainable principles and Lifemark design standards.

Simon's response to the brief was to design an efficient and flexible layout that is comprised of a central core of service spaces, the kitchen, bathroom, garage and entrance, with minimal internal circulation to access sleeping accommodation and a large open plan living area.  A standard central core allowed for a range of design options with living and sleeping configurations of different shapes and sizes attaching to the core.  The design Simon presented comprised a standard three bedroom and study design, however other options could change the sleeping accommodation to form a two bedroom or four bedroom and the master bedroom ensuite could be removed to create a formal lounge.

For further information about the design, please contact Simon Blencowe.
