With an increasing work load and wanting to expand their services to the community, the Cancer Society needed to significantly expand their existing office building. Various alterations in the past meant that the existing building layout was not efficient, and with the reception area in the middle of the building, it was not very inviting to patients and visitors.
The design process considered a number of options, however it was identified that the most aesthetically pleasing solution and the most efficient spatial plan was to construct a second storey office area along the street front.
While the reception area remained essentially in the same location, the area was significantly enhanced by the use of clerestory glazing to let light into the middle of the building, improved thorough fares and a new entrance direct off Riddiford Street.
The opportunity was also taken to install a lift and allow accessible paths to all areas of the building. Plus a central stairway allows for easy access between all floors.
Apart from the new office and meeting areas, the project also included refurbishment of existing spaces to update and enhance the building as a whole.
