Habitat for Humanity Build
Helping Hand at Habitat for Humanity
Having been invited by Habitat for Humanity to help on their current home build, the team at Pynenburg & Collins swapped their pencils and computers for hammers and saws as we headed to Bunnings in Porirua.
Being built in the Bunnings carpark, the four bedroom home is destined for Cannons Creek in Porirua. When we arrived is was time to install the soffit linings and start applying the building wrap to the exterior frames.
With us split into three teams it was good to have the soffit linings up by lunch time. After a hearty BBQ lunch it was onto the building wrap and flashing tape around the window / door openings.
Despite this being a reasonably straight forward task, flagging energy levels and a few sore muscles saw the sun setting with just a small section left to do. With a late burst of energy the last of the building wrap was stapled in place and a well-earned finish to the day saw the house looking somewhat different from when we started.
"This was an excellent work activity. Something very different from the usual team building type exercises", says company director Tim Burns. "We felt like we had achieved something, plus it was an excellent opportunity for some of our team to be on a building site, who don't normally get that opportunity".
With the Habitat for Humanity crew supplying all the tools and materials needed, plus guidance from a couple of experienced builders, the day was a rewarding experience. One that we would highly recommend to any work or social group as a way to feel that your direct efforts have helped to achieve something practical and real.
